Пирин е втората по височина планина в България след Рила (2925 м), а в рамките на Европа заема шесто място. Площта му е 2585 квадратни километра.В Пирин има два върха над 2900 м (Вихрен и Кутело), седем над 2800 м, седемнадесет над 2700 м, 32 над 2600 м и 40 над 2500 м. Трите най-високи върха са мраморни, а най-високите гранитни върхове (Полежан и Каменица) се намират на страничните била. Най-високият гранитен връх на главното било е Бъндеришкият чукар - 2732 м).Най-голямото водно богатство на Пирин са красивите езера. На брой 176, те имат ледников произход, разположени са в малки и големи циркуси. Поради този си произход те са сравнително дълбоки, бистри. Пирин е извънредно богат на растения животни. До момента са установени около 1300 вида висши растения, което е 1/3 от всичките познати в България, 320 вида мъхове и няколко стотин вида водорасли. Висок е процентът на локалните ендемити - растения, които се срещат само в Пирин. Те са 18 на брой - пирински мак, пиринска ливадина, пиринска мащерка, давидов лопен и др. Много ог тези растения са редки и защитени, но най-вече познатият на всички еделвайс, който се среща най-вече по Джамджиевите скали под Вихрен. Най-известното дърво в Пирин е Байкушевата мура, носеща името на откривателя си, лесничея Байкушев. Смята се, че тя на възраст над 1300 г., а приблизителните и размери са височина 24 м, диаметър 2,2 м. и обиколка 7,8 м. Още по-голямо е богатството на животински видове. Познати са над 2000 вида и подвида безгръбначни животни (паяци, стоножки, насекоми, охлюви) и почти 250 вида гръбначни. От последните преобладават птиците (177 вида) и бозайниците (45 вида), а рибите са само 6 вида. Много от тези животни са застрашени и се нуждаят от специална защита - скален орел, трипръст кълвач, планински кефал, шипоопашата костенурка. Най-често могат да се срещнат дива коза, сърна, мечка, вълк, лисица, орел, сокол, глухар и др. За защита на това богатство през 1962 е създаден национален парк Вихрен, който през 1975 е преименуван на Пирин. Площта му е 40 332 хектара. Тук е най-голям броят на ендемичните, застрашени и редки растения в българска защитена територия. Резерватите Баюви дупки-Джинджирица (1934 г. - един от най-старите в България) и Юлен (1994 г.) заемат 15 % от парка. През 1983 г. Пирин е включен в списъка на световното наследство на ЮНЕСКО. Град Банско ( 9 134 души) е разположен на 925 м надморска височина в подножието на североизточен Пирин, в близост до река Места, под най – високият и най – красивият карст на планината. Банско се намира на 160 км. южно от София, 60 км. югоизточно от Благоевград и на 6 км. южно от Разлог. Банско не само е едно от най – снежните места в страната, но и притежава богато архитектурно-историческо наследство. Градът е известен зимен курорт и административен център. Днешният административен център на община Банско е разположен на мястото на селище, обитавано последователно от траки, римляни, византийци и славяни. Останките от антични крепости, тракийски надгробни могили, средновековни поселения, оброчища, църкви и параклиси в землището на града свидетелстват за няколко исторически епохи. В местността Старото градище, на около 4 км югозападно от града и в местността Юлен (по течението на река Дамяница) има останки от антични крепости. Предполага се, че средновековното селище се е налирало в местността Света Троица. В близост до Старото градище са разкрити тракийски надгробни могили. Югоизточно от Банско се намират останките от късносредновековните еднокорабни църкви “Св. Георги” и “Св. Илия” – паметници на културата. В по-късните години Банско се обособява като значителен търговски и занаятчийски център от нов, възрожденски тип. Замогват се големи родове, които не само пренасят културата на посещаваните страни в родината, но и изпращат децата си да учат в чужбина. Съприкосновението с богатата европейска култура оказва изключително плодотворно влияние върху духовния напредък на града. Подобрява се битът на хората, строят се здрави двукатни каменни къщи крепости с високи зидове и тежки масивни порти, с дълги стрехи от черна мура. Този архитектурен стил достига пълен разцвет през Възраждането. Най-ранните къщи - Хадживълчовата, Хаджирусковата и Веляновата, са защитени с вътрешни скривалища (скриовници) и бойници. Bansko (Bulgarian: Банско) is a town in southwestern Bulgaria, located at the foot of Pirin at an altitude of 925 m above sea level. It is considered to be the most developed Ski and Winter Resort in Eastern Europe, and is one of the best in Europe. Legends There are several legends about who founded Bansko. The Bulgarian Evangelical Church Community, the first Protestant church in Bulgaria, was founded in Bansko on 6 August 1868. Until 5 October 1912, Bansko was a part of the Ottoman Empire, but enjoyed a quasi self-rule autonomy granted by the sultan. The town was ruled by an assembly of the elders, while justice was administered by the Turkish judge in Razlog. It was incorporated in Bulgaria in 1912 as a result of the First Balkan War. Bansko today Bansko, once mainly a stockbreeding and travelling merchant community, has nowadays become a center of winter and summer tourism. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for recreation. In recent years, the town has gained international popularity after the start of the annual Bansko Jazz Festival and consequently the annual Bansko pop-star concert featuring top pop stars. The nearby village of Banya, located only 5 km from the town, is known for its 27 thermal mineral springs. A new gondola lift was built in 2003 to replace a minibus ride up to the ski slopes of Todorka. Several other gondolas and ski lifts are in the process of being built. These developments, along with the construction of extensive housing and recreational facilities around the gondola (which is on the southwest end of the town by the river), have made Bansko a popular and growing destination. Pirin is the second highest mountain range in Bulgaria after Rila (2,925 m) and the sixth highest in Europe after the Caucasus, the Alps, Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees, Mount Etna and the aforementioned Rila when each is represented by its highest peak only. It has an area of 2,585 kmsup2; and an average height of 1,033 m.
